Algeti, Kazbegi, Kintrishi and Pshav-Khevsureti Protected Areas Friends Associations have been established in 2015 under the framework of the “Support Programme for Protected Areas in the Caucasus – Georgia”, as non-governmental, non-profit, membership-based organisations. They combine people or groups of people who are trying to contribute to the protection and development of Protected Areas. Membership, donations and private projects will encourage associations to implement the activities necessary for reaching PA goals and aims. These entities will closely collaborate with the Agency of Protected Areas, as well as with the relevant territorial administrations.
The main goals of the Associations are:
PA Friends Associations will act according to their capacities and needs of the protected areas and will identify and implement different types of projects, such as: educational and awareness raising programmes, improving PA infrastructure, scientific research, monitoring, etc.
Friends Association of Kazbegi, Algeti and Kintrishi protected areas are already functioning and are currently in charge of implementing the socio-economic development measures for the respective support zone communities. This includes organisation and monitoring of the Financial Participatory Approach (FPA) contests for the local community members living within the PAs or in the vicinity of the boundaries and benefiting from the adjacent PAs.
